PunctuationCheck is a free punctuation and grammar checker that runs in your browser. Paste your text and press Check to see every punctuation, spelling and grammar issue underlined exactly where it appears. Hover any underline to see the suggested fix and why it is wrong, then accept the fixes you agree with or ignore the rest.

The tool uses two passes over your text: mechanical rules that catch doubled commas, spacing errors and missing capitals instantly in your browser, plus a language model that reads sentences in context to find errors rules cannot describe. You can check up to 5,000 characters at a time, as often as you like. It detects issues with commas, periods, apostrophes, quotation marks, hyphens, dashes, colons, semicolons, question marks and exclamation marks, plus spelling, capitalization and spacing around punctuation.

No account is required, no trial needs to start, and there is no paywall after a certain number of checks. Your text is checked and discarded on the servers, and your recent checks are saved only in your own browser where you can clear them any time. The tool works in American, British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand or South African English.

Shopper questions

What does the punctuation checker actually check?

The tool checks commas, periods, apostrophes, quotation marks, hyphens, dashes, colons, semicolons, question marks and exclamation marks, plus spelling, capitalization and spacing around punctuation. Clear grammar errors are flagged as well.

What is the difference between Check and Rewrite?

Check fixes mechanics only and will not reword you, swap your vocabulary or change your tone. Rewrite goes further by breaking up run-on sentences and tightening wordy phrasing while keeping your meaning.

Is it really free?

Yes, there is no account to create, no trial to start and no paywall after a certain number of checks. You can check up to 5,000 characters at a time, as often as you like.

Do you store the text I paste in?

Not on servers. Your document is checked, the suggestions come back, and it is discarded. Your last few checks are saved in your own browser so the History button works, and corrections may be cached for seven days against a one-way hash. Browser history never leaves your device and you can wipe it with Clear all history. Nothing is used to train any model.

Which version of English does it use?

Whichever you choose. Pick American, British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand or South African English from the dropdown above the editor before you check, and spelling and punctuation conventions follow that choice.
