The Novel Kit analyzes fiction manuscripts to catch errors that spellcheckers miss. It reads a manuscript's own invented vocabulary, names, and places, then checks them consistently throughout the text. The software runs 42 reports covering character and place directories, glossary generation, series continuity, typography consistency, and production reference materials. Every analysis is rule-based and deterministic, with no AI involvement and no manuscript storage. It works in any browser without plugins or Microsoft Word.

The tool was created in 2020 as Glossary Generator by author and developer James Murdo to identify terminology across his own manuscripts. It has grown to provide comprehensive pre-publication checking for authors, editors, and publishing professionals across traditionally published, small press, and self-published works.

Shopper questions

What does The Novel Kit actually find that other tools miss?

The Novel Kit finds consistency issues that are only wrong in the context of your specific book, such as a name spelled two ways, a term introduced but never explained, a place appearing under slightly different names, or titles capitalized inconsistently. It produces 42 reports identifying these issues with exact chapter and location references, which grammar tools and spellcheckers cannot detect.

Do I need The Novel Kit if my book has been professionally edited?

Yes. Analysis of 21,956 professionally edited published novels shows 99.9% spell at least one of their own names or invented words two ways, and 85.5% do it ten times or more. The Novel Kit catches these errors that nothing else on your desk is looking for, regardless of where you are in the publishing process.

Should I stop using Grammarly, PerfectIt, or ProWritingAid?

No. Those tools read your prose and editorial style for grammar, tense, rhythm, and repetition. The Novel Kit reads your world - the names, places, and invented terms unique to your book that no dictionary contains. They do different jobs and most authors benefit from using both together.

Is my manuscript stored after scanning?

No. The file is transiently processed for the length of one request and never stored. No manuscript text or filename reaches a database, and nothing is left to read afterwards.

How long does a scan take to run?

A full-length novel takes a few seconds. Across a test set of 38 books, the slowest scan ran in two and a half seconds.
