ProMatte
Real-time AI background removal for OBS that runs entirely on your PC
ProMatte is a free, open-source OBS filter that removes, blurs or replaces your webcam background using AI, processing everything on your machine with no cloud
About this launch

ProMatte is a filter for OBS Studio that uses AI to process your webcam background in real-time on your PC. You can remove the background to make it transparent, blur it, replace it with a solid colour, image, video or another OBS source, or simply dim it. The plugin requires no configuration to start—Quality on Auto mode measures your machine's capabilities and picks an appropriate model automatically.
All processing happens locally in memory on your machine. Frames are never uploaded, saved or transmitted anywhere. There is no telemetry, no account and no licence key required. The only outgoing connection is a model download you start yourself.
ProMatte ships with five bundled models and supports hardware from old laptops with CPU-only processing to modern GPUs. It runs on Windows (verified end-to-end), loads and removes backgrounds on Apple Silicon, and builds and installs on Linux though real-world testing there is pending. On a 2017 laptop with an i7-7500U and GeForce 940MX, the filter costs 1.7 to 3.3 ms of render time while OBS maintains 30 fps.

Shopper questions
Is it really free?
Yes. ProMatte is GPL-2.0-or-later with no account, no licence key and no paid tier. Sponsorship is optional and funds development time, hardware and models, never the code.
Does it send my camera anywhere?
No. Frames are processed in memory on your machine and are never uploaded, saved or transmitted. There is no telemetry and no account. The only outgoing request is a model download you start yourself.
Do I need an NVIDIA card?
No. It runs on any D3D12-capable GPU through DirectML, including Intel and AMD, and falls back to the CPU. The reference machine used for measurements is a 2017 laptop with a GeForce 940MX.
Will it slow OBS down?
No. Inference runs on its own thread and the render thread never waits for it. On the test laptop the filter cost 1.7 to 3.3 ms of render time while OBS held 30 fps.
Why is the first start slow?
The first DirectML session on a given GPU compiles shaders. On the GeForce 940MX this took 8.4 seconds and on the Intel HD 620 between 30 to 76 seconds. Video passes through unchanged while compilation happens.
