Tap The Tone is a music learning and creation app that lets you tap notes onto a staff and hear them instantly with automatic note and chord recognition. The core features—notes, staff, all instruments and rainbow note colors—are free forever with no subscription required.
The free Starter version includes live note and chord recognition, MIDI keyboard support, and visual feedback with color-coded pitches. Pro adds six-track MIDI recording, MusicXML and MIDI import/export, karaoke mode for singing along with scores, audio export, SoundFont import, and tools like quantization and key transposition.
Sessions are automatically saved to MIDI continuously without pressing record. You can layer instruments into arrangements, import scores with lyrics from notation apps, and export your work to any DAW or notation software. The app supports 12 languages and works on iPhone, iPad, Mac with Apple silicon, and Android.

Can I use a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. Connect a MIDI keyboard over USB or Lightning. Tap The Tone detects it automatically with velocity, sustain pedal, pitch bend and mod-wheel vibrato support.
Is Pro a subscription?
No. Pro is a one-time purchase that is yours forever, including 12 months of new features. The optional Update Pass extends access to newly released features by another 12 months but is never required.
Can I import MIDI or MusicXML files?
Yes. Pro imports standard MIDI files and MusicXML scores from notation apps with repeats written out, accidentals preserved, and the ability to swap the instrument of each voice.
Can I export to my DAW?
Yes. Export MIDI, MusicXML, WAV or M4A and drop it straight into any DAW or notation app. Your MIDI keeps its lyrics, title and composer.
Do I need an account or internet?
No. You can play and create without an account or internet connection. Recordings are saved to your device or your personal iCloud or Google Drive and never sent to the company.
