Photosynthesis
Two lenses, one press, one high-res photo
An iPhone camera app that fires two lenses simultaneously and fuses them into one high-resolution photo without generative AI.
About this launch

Photosynthesis is a camera app for iPhone that captures from two lenses at the same time and combines them into a single high-resolution photo. The app uses optical detail from each lens—detail from the zoom lens with the wider angle of the main camera—keeping the best parts of each to deliver photos with both field of view and detail. Every pixel is captured by your iPhone's camera with no generative AI. The app includes a custom editor with standard editing tools adapted for two-lens photos, allowing you to adjust alignment, crop, apply filters, and export in multiple formats including layered Photoshop documents, spatial photos, and 3D formats.

Shopper questions
Which iPhone models are supported?
Every iPhone with 2 or 3 lenses on the back from the iPhone 11 onwards is officially supported. iPhones with 2 lenses can combine both lenses into one image, while iPhones with 3 lenses can choose which pair they want to combine, or combine all three (currently in beta).
Is the detail created by AI?
There is no generative AI use in Photosynthesis. Machine learning is used to calculate the best alignment and colour match between the lens captures, but every pixel of detail comes from a photo taken by your camera.
Why can't I zoom in the viewfinder?
Photosynthesis is designed to capture the most detail possible for every photo without compromising with digital zoom. You can then focus in by cropping the photo once it has been processed.
Does it work up close?
Because the lenses are physically separate on your phone, the closer you are to the subject, the harder the two photos are to align. If they don't align properly, you can always export the image from each lens on its own.
How does Photosynthesis differ from Apple's Deep Fusion?
Apple's Deep Fusion fuses several frames taken by the same lens to reduce noise. Photosynthesis blends complete photos taken by two different lenses, so the detail in the centre comes optically from the closer lens, rather than from a cleaner version of the same view.
