Normal Map Generator is a browser-based tool for creating texture maps used in 3D graphics and game development. Upload any image and generate four types of maps: normal maps that add surface detail through lighting, displacement maps that store height data, ambient occlusion maps for crevice shading, and specular maps for highlight control. All processing happens locally in your browser; source images are never sent to servers. Preview results in 2D and 3D before downloading PNG files at source resolution.

The free version handles images up to 5MB and 4096 pixels per side, producing 8-bit PNG downloads. The Pro plan supports larger files up to 50MB, batch processing of up to 1000 images, and 16-bit output for height maps. Maps work directly in Blender, Unity, and Unreal Engine after importing the PNG files.

What it does

  • Normal map generation from images
  • Displacement, ambient occlusion, and specular map creation
  • 2D and 3D preview
  • Adjustable parameters: Strength, Level, Blur/Sharp
  • Invert X, Y, and Height controls
  • Sobel vs Scharr algorithm selection
  • Source-size PNG export
  • Batch processing up to 1000 images (Pro)
  • 16-bit height map output (Pro)
  • Local image processing with no server uploads

Pricing

Pricing model: Freemium

Free plan: up to 5 MB per image, one image at a time, 8-bit PNG downloads. NormalMap Pro: $19 USD one-time payment; up to 50 MB per image, batch processing up to 1000 images, 16-bit grayscale PNG for height maps.

Shopper questions

What kind of image produces the best normal map?

Evenly lit textures with clear surface detail convert more cleanly than photos with hard shadows or glare. Start with a flat-lit brick, rock, or fabric photo before generating, as sharp cast shadows can be mistaken for height.

Are my source images uploaded to a server?

No. The source image is read and processed in your browser and is not uploaded to the site's servers. Analytics may record file type, size, and dimensions, but not the image content itself.

What is the difference between a normal map and a displacement map?

A normal map stores surface direction and changes lighting without moving the silhouette. A displacement map stores grayscale height and can move geometry only when the renderer, material, and mesh subdivision allow it.

Can I use the maps in Blender, Unity, or Unreal Engine?

Yes. Export the PNG and import it as the matching texture type in your 3D software. Check color space, Y direction, and the material slot before treating the result as final.

How can I reduce noise or overly sharp details?

Move Blur/Sharp slightly negative to smooth grain and compression artifacts. If edges still look harsh, lower Strength before adding sharpening. Use Sobel when Scharr adds noise not on the real surface.
