What is mesh simplification?
Mesh simplification reduces the number of triangles in a 3D model while keeping its overall shape. MeshCrunch uses quadric-error metrics to collapse edges while preserving the silhouette. It is lossy by design and requires inspection before shipping.
What 3D formats are supported?
Upload formats: OBJ, STL, PLY, OFF, GLB, glTF. Output formats: OBJ, STL, PLY, OFF, GLB (glTF is import-only as single files cannot reference external buffers). In-browser preview supports OBJ, STL, PLY, GLB, glTF but not OFF.
What is a LOD chain and why do I need one?
A level-of-detail chain is a set of progressively simpler versions of the same model. Engines swap to lighter LODs as objects move farther from the camera, saving GPU time without visible quality loss. MeshCrunch builds the entire ladder from one request with each level decimated from the original, costing one processing credit per level.
How long are files kept?
Without an account, files are deleted after 24 hours. Signing in claims uploads automatically onto your account's retention window: 7 days on a free account, 30 days on Starter, 90 days on Pro. Users can delete any asset at any time to remove stored files immediately.
Can I use MeshCrunch from an AI client?
Yes. MeshCrunch runs a standard remote MCP server supporting clients like Claude Desktop, Codex CLI and Cursor.
