FrontBack Scanner
Free flatbed photo scanning software for Mac and Windows
A free app that scans multiple photos at once on a flatbed, auto-detects each print, straightens and names them, and pairs backs with fronts automatically.
About this launch

FrontBack Scanner is a free desktop application for macOS and Windows that automates batch photo scanning. Users lay multiple prints on a flatbed scanner; the software detects each photo, automatically straightens them to a fraction of a degree with 99.8% accuracy, crops them individually, turns them right-side up, and saves each as a numbered file. When prints are flipped over and scanned again, the software pairs each back with its front by position on the glass, preserving handwritten dates and notes. The app also stitches photos larger than the scanner bed by scanning overlapping passes, and can split previously scanned whole-bed images into individual photos. There is no account, watermark, photo limit, or upload required; the entire app is free forever.

Shopper questions
Is FrontBack Scanner really free?
Yes, completely free with no account, watermarks, or limits. The entire app is free forever. It is built by Timeline Scan, which offers a separate paid photo dating service.
Which operating systems does FrontBack Scanner support?
It runs on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, and on Windows 10 (version 1809) and Windows 11, 64-bit. The Mac version is signed and notarized by Apple.
How many photos can be scanned at once?
As many as fit on the flatbed glass. Most flatbeds hold four to six standard prints per pass, and auto-detection separates each one into its own cropped, straightened, right-side-up file.
How does front-and-back pairing work?
Scan the fronts of photos, then flip each photo over where it lies and scan again. FrontBack matches each back to its front by position on the glass and saves it with a suffix (like _b by default), so the files stay together.
Which scanners work with FrontBack Scanner?
Any scanner your computer can see. On Mac, Wi-Fi and network all-in-ones supporting AirScan/eSCL work with no driver, and USB flatbeds work through their macOS Image Capture driver. On Windows, anything with a Windows (WIA) scanner driver works, covering virtually every flatbed and all-in-one.
